Surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues from across the state, Plain Local Schools Superintendent Brent May was installed as the 53rd President of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA) on August 9, 2022, at GlenOak High School.

The 80+ guests in attendance were welcomed by Plain Local students from the Guys with Ties and the Frazer Fierce Females, both leadership groups focused on the empowerment of students. GlenOak senior student Lindsey Yocum sang the National Anthem to begin the program. BASA Executive Director Dr. David Axner served as master of ceremonies, and Plain Local Schools Board of Education President John Halkias shared remarks with the crowd.

The Buckeye Association of School Administrators is a private, not-for-profit organization that serves school superintendents and other administrators throughout the state of Ohio. BASA, established in 1969, is an affiliate of the American Association of School Administrators. The Executive Director of BASA, Dr. David Axner shared that the mission of BASA is to inspire and support its members, develop exemplary school system leaders and advocate for public education. He described Brent as a quiet leader that will always stand up for kids and public education.

Halkias shared about the type of leader he has observed Mr. May to be while serving on the Plain Local Schools Board of Education. He remarked, “The most important thing to know about Brent is that he truly cares about our kids. He believes that every child deserves an opportunity to achieve their full potential. Brent’s passion is connecting with students on all levels, and as a dad who is raising his own children in our district, I truly think he considers all of our kids his own.”

In his remarks, Mr. May thanked his family, colleagues, and mentors who have shaped him as a leader. He shared, “Leadership matters, and I think we have a great responsibility during some of the most uncertain and chaotic times of our lifetime. I believe that how we respond will define what our future will look like.”

May is the first superintendent to serve as BASA President since 2014 from Region 7, which includes Coshocton, Tuscarawas, Stark, Carroll, Harrison, Jefferson, Guernsey, Noble, and Belmont counties.
