Summer Recap

This June, 130 elementary students participated in the Plain Local Schools Spread Your Wings Summer Arts Series. With curriculum and funding support from ArtsinStark, students put their creativity on full display with over thirty lessons in visual art, music, and movement. Students built instruments, learned to work in several media, choreographed dances, and so much more.

In the second week, students visited the Canton Museum of Art for a guided tour and a studio art experience. CMA Education Director Amanda Crowe led the young artists through an exploration of the public sculpture outside and of Reclaimed: The Art of Recology inside. Summer School Principal David Thompson said, “I knew we were going to participate in a studio art experience, but what we found in the classroom was so much more. Amanda Crowe and her staff set up dozens of tables with all kinds of material from string to reclaimed objects and cardboard tubes. Our students immediately began building detailed projects such as a model village, microscope, airplane with spinning prop, and more.”

Throughout the program, Stark County Librarian Mary Halley visited classrooms to connect literacy and the arts. She led students through several interesting and artistic projects including building a fully functional kaleidoscope. Each work of art was saved in classrooms until our culminating Summer Arts Celebration at GlenOak High School. Families toured the pop-up art gallery and heard a musical number featuring student built box guitars, pan flutes, and shakers.

In addition to our Summer Arts Series, approximately one hundred additional students participated in Dance, Musical Theater, Algebra, and Health offerings. In total, nearly 380 students participated in summer programs in Plain Local Schools.

Summer learning programs in Plain Local Schools are a great place for students to expand their experiences and create memories that will last a lifetime. The entire district comes together to support these offerings from our dedicated teachers, food service department, transportation, custodial staff, and administrators.
