Use the magnifying glass to zoom in closer to areas on the map.  We also have a large copy at the Administration Office, 901 44th St. NW, Canton 44709 (located behind Glenwood Intermediate School.) Is there any sort of open enrollment at all in Plain Local?

The Plain Local School District does not offer open enrollment.

The Plain Local School District has an agreement with the other schools in our vocational compact (North Canton, Lake and Jackson) to not offer open enrollment.  The four schools work together to allow high school students the ability to attend a career technical or specialized program at a school in the compact if it is not offered within their home district.  In addition we are in a collaborative with Canton City Schools for many programs including the Portage Montessori School. We believe that this allows us the ability to share specialized programming in order to meet the individual needs of students without them having to leave their home district.

Why are the elementary schools starting 10 minutes earlier this year?

We are trying to be careful with our time that the students are receiving instruction.  Starting 10 minutes earlier this year allows our teachers to have more teaching time during the school year.  Also, I have heard from many parents that they would like to drop their children off earlier at school for their work schedules.  I believe we can accomplish both with a slight time change.

Girls Soccer Team Update

We have a new coach that hopes to have both a JV & a Varsity team for the 2013 Season - as mentioned by Superintendent May, cuts will depend on the number of students interested in participating.  They are currently having conditioning and "open field" workouts.  Coach Brent Walker can be contacted at 718-414-5998 for further information.

Why is it that the student workers who are employees are paid under the goverments minimum wage?

School districts are permitted to pay students workers a training rate. Students working in the district are paid and supervised under the training classification and rate.  If they are retained after graduation, they are moved to a substitute worker wage that is at least minimum wage, and they are expected to handle more responsibility at that time.
